Candace Award Program Scheduled this Summer The Candace Awad Program at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. the award program that will serve to recognize achievements of African-American Women (and men who have demonstrated unique support of African-American women). Candace was a queen of Ethiopia around the time of Christ. Her name is royal as she is descended from a long line of Candaces. She is credited for bringing Christianity to her country by sending her high treasurer, the eunuch, to Jerusalem to seek information concerning the new religion of Christ. The Candaces were the first women ever to rule a country without any interruption for seven hundred years. One of the most remarkable Candaces of Ethiopia reigned during the era of Alexandra the Great. Other than carrying the tile of Queen, she also commanded Ethiopias army and several times led her country into decisive battles, even against Alexander in 332 B.C. During that campaign, the Queen was able to stop the conqueror, forcing him to return to Egypt. To protect his fame, he made no other attempt to conquer the children of Cush. Recipients have received the Candace Award, on the National Level since 1982. The Candace is the symbol of the National Coalition of 100 Black which is an n advocacy organization that strives to empower Black women seeking to meet their professional goals. The Coalition fosters programs that provide a comprehensive network among profession Black women and establishes links to the civic, corporate and political sectors. |
