| Day of Peace [April, 1996] - A collaborative
effort of the religious and civic community to respond to the need for all
segments of the community to work together for common goals of non-violence and
peace.
Bosom Buddy Campaign [initiated January 4, 1997] A citywide campaign focusing on women helping women alleviate breast cancer. Meet the Candidates [Spring, 1997] A collaborative effort with the NAACP of educating the public about issues involving the City of San Antonio city council & mayoral candidates. Founders' Day Celebration [April 20, 1997] - Doubletree Hotel - featuring Jewel Jackson McCabe (New York), National Founder & Fashion Show coordinated by Penny McCutchen Gardener. Christmas Celebration & Initiation of New Members [December]This is an exciting time of year because we bring high achieving women members into the organization who are committed to reaching out and sharing their expertise and values with others that may not have had similar opportunities. WINS-(Women Working In Neighborhood Schools) Project initiated by the distribution of school supplies to more that 1200 children initiated on August 5, 1997. This project incorporates the adoption of two (2) East San Antonio public schools, namely Booker T. Washington Elementary and Wheatley Middle School. Chapter members are involved with the students on several levels throughout the school year. This project is presented in conjunction with San Antonio Fighting Back. CHILDREN'S COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR[December 13, 1997] Highlights being proactive in maintaining good health within the African American community. The Fair includes caring for the entire family, from infancy to our elder citizens. Thirty-five health care vendor booths were available to provide assistance to the families. Children's Community Health Fairs occur twice a year. MENTORNET [Implemented January 1998] A leadership program beginning with teenage girls and following them into adulthood will help young ladies meet career aspirations through proper planning, exposure, and preparation. The program format includes Saturday classes with professional facilitators, some with special computer skills building and application. There also are special components on civic, interoffice relationships, social, and cultural awareness. Coalition members serve as mentors. |
